With most viruses the immune response eliminates the infectious agent from the host. But some viruses remain latent, for example the herpes group, which persist in nerve cells in a latent form even after an immune response is expressed and, from time to time , become activated. When this occurs newly formed viruses or viral proteins are released at nerve endings, causing a lesion; the cause of this lesion is immunopathic (host determined immunopathology) as well as cytopathic (virus determined cytopathology).
