The aim of this paper is not to denigrate the academic learning process nor to argue that it is inferior to more sensory learning processes. Nor does it seek to establish the superiority of scholarly authority over flesh-witnessing authority. Rather, its aim is to elucidate the clash of authorities between the scholar and the flesh-witness and to heighten awareness that the relationship between the two is a tense power struggle. For scholars a flesh-witness is never merely a source of information. It is a rival authority.
