Local Government Efforts to Promote the “Three Es” of Sustainable Development: Survey in Medium to Large Cities in the United States

If cities are the places where most of the world’s resource destruction and pollution takes place, it makes sense to look for the solutions to those problems at the local level itself. It is not surprising that many local governments across the world are adopting policies and programs that attempt to reduce their environmental footprints and assure quality of life for all their residents. It is in this context that sustainable development is beginning to make the jump from a visionary, global-scale thinking to concrete action at the local level. Thus, the expression from the United Nation’s Conference on the Human Environment (1972) and the Rio Summit: “Think Global, Act Local.”
